Here are some details about global data sources, about 2600 sources.

A few things we learned along the way:

More than 200 countries have dedicated space to Open Data, whether these portals are official, unofficial or civic initiatives.
The United States boasts an impressive 500 Open Data portals, ranging from citywide to those of intergovernmental organizations, such as the UN. We have our favorite portal of course, that of the City of Durham and Durham County.

If you weren't aware, various government agencies dump their data at https://www.data.gov.au/dataset

Its a good source for real-world data, though quite hard to find something interesting since theres a lot of noise, eg council recycling collection zones...

But heres a few that could be interesting:

GNAF:

Some tax statistics (which is of course annoyingly in excel format):
