Enable freehand editing of calculated fields
Not Planned
If you created a complicated formula and need to change something, it would be great to be able to just go in and edit the formula in the text field. If necessary, make a check of the formula mandatory, but it would make life a lot easier and save lots of time and prevent user frustration.
Best regards,
Ingo
Hi Ingo,
Are you able to elaborate on exactly what you wanted to modify and how?
Reason I ask is because we did improve the editing of calc fields via the formular builder in 7.2 .
See screenshots below, notice how you can pick a certain formula and modify just that formula, with both a 'clear' and 'undo' button.
If you wanted to simple chop and change the formula with freehand sql, then you muse be using a freehand calc field.

Hi David,
Since we were not able to upgrade to 7.2, yet and "minor" enhancements like the formular editor are not so "publicly" advertised in all the release communication, I was not aware that it is now possible to pick any part of the formula and edit it. This is indeed a big improvement and will probably get rid of quite some frustration our users are experiencing.
But especially the Excel aficionados, who are used to typing in formulas rather then clicking them in an guided editor would still love to be able to just type in the formula. Maybe be supported by auto completion of the column names, available in the report, etc. Or maybe they want to copy & paste a formula form a different report. That is still substantially faster then doing all the leg work in the current editor.
Freehand SQL is not really an option for the business users, since they usually do not have direct access to the underlying data model and might not know the physical column names or what prefix to use if the column name is not unique accross tables.
We just got a lot of flag from our users due to the formula editor and I thought I raise it as an idea...in case there are more people out there who have the same experience.
Best regards,
Ingo

Sorry for the delay on this Ingo.
I understand what you're after, but at this point in time, no such feature is planned. Going to have to close this down, but we can re-open if we get more votes on this ;)
