is it possible to create shared/universal filters?

We are providing YF 8.6 and soon 9.3 with Energy Components. We have a got a question from a customer who want to know if they can set up universal filters in YT like "universe" in Business Objects. I guess they are asking for a way to set up hierarchies and filters that can be used in any report or dashboard even if the report does not share the same data source?

Any thoughts? Thanks

Hey John-Arne,

I hope you are well and have had a lovely week !

From the sounds of it, I think View Level filter may be what you are after - Though please read this wiki page linked here that goes into more detail about what a view level filter is - Though, essentially this is a filter that has been build via view level and can be used in any report

After you've given it a quick look, let me know your thoughts and if this is/ isn't what you are after!

Thanks Lesley.

I guess what the customer is asking for is the ability to create filters independently based on data sources (not related to reports), and adding these filters to dashboards and linking them to elements (or re-use across reports).

I could not find anything similar described in the wiki page (are there any examples available for view level filters?).

What I've found so far is perhaps a "best" practice when creating dashboard is to have one report that can act as a "master" for filter linking it to each report on the dashboard instead of displaying filters from each report (especially when they have the same names)?

Thanks again

Hey John-Arne,

I hope you are well!

Ah ok - We have Source Filters, however, these are used for the purpose of restricting data, for example if you have data for multiple company sites, you can restrict the employees to only see the data for site1, if they are from site1, or give them access to all sites in the a one region, but restrict their access to the data from any other region.

The method you mention for using one report filter as the parent filter on a dashboard to link to the other reports, would be the way to go in this case.

I am sorry that this is not the answer you were hoping for!

Let me know if you have any further questions, regarding the filters - I will be happy to help :)

Hello Lesley

Thanks for the follow-up. A good weekend and now a busy week creating best practices for using Yellowfin with Energy Components ;-) There is lot of interest for the product both internally and with our customers.

Although it was an external customer asking for a global filter, I've also found it useful in the past thus it may be something to consider for yf in a future release.

There will surely be more questions at some point, but for now we're good. Thanks again for your support!

Have a good afternoon!

Hey John-Arne,

I am pleased to hear there is lots of interest in yellowfin! My personal favourite feature is 'Stories', I just think they are a hoot very practical.

Anywho, in order for the global filters feature to be considered in a future release, an idea would need to be created - So I have already done this on your behalf, I hope thats ok!

You will find the community idea post linked here < & I have raised this with the development team too.

All updates on the progress of the idea will be within the idea post, so I will go ahead and mark this ticket as complete

I hope you enjoy the rest of your week :)

Best Wishes,

Lesley
