Exporting and Importing a view via XML format 7.3+

Before the 7.3+ update I was able to take a complex view with many tables and export it into an XML format. Then I could change it in an editor and import it in as an alternative view. In this example I was changing a couple of the table names to create another view we required. Only the table names needed to change in this case. I could do this without recreating dozens of multi column joins.

Now when I export it appears to be in a proprietary unreadable format. (.yfx)

Is it still possible to do what I did before, and if not do you have another suggestion?

I would also be interested to know if views can be modelled into Yellowfin via web service calls.

Have you tried opening the file in Editor? - isnt the file still XML?

Hi Travis,

Good question, and thanks Mark for jumping in here. What you said is almost spot on.

The .yfx format is simply a container that holds the regular .xml that you are used to seeing, and a new JSON file that works with some of the new functionality of 7.3+. To see this, just open up the .yfx file with an archive manager like 7Zip. From there, you should be able open up the YFExport.xml file and makes changes.

However, as the import/export tool underwent a few changes that were more than just skin-deep, I am not in a position to guarantee that everything will work the same prior to 7.3+. I would approach this by giving your previous method a shot, testing thoroughly, and then let us know what the results are. Hopefully things will work the same as you're accustomed to, but we'll try to provide any guidance we can if this isn't the case.

Thanks,

Thanks for the info. The scenario I was testing still works.
