Modify report SQL without resetting the layout and charts

Tom Manning shared this question 45 days ago
Completed

Whenever we make changes to a report SQL, it seems the graph/chart and layout reset as well. Can the SQL statement be changed from the back-end? What tables are involved?

Hi Ankit,

Yes, we are aware that 7.4 is at EOL. Our upgrade of Yellowfin is set for June 2025. For now, however, we still have to deal with this.

The objective is to modify the SQL of an existing report. I know this can be done by editing the report and editing the SQL. However, when I do that, any existing report layout and graph/chart gets reset or disappears. So I was thinking of modifying it on the database side.

I tried on the REPORTINSTANCE table but this did not change the report SQL.

Please advise what we can do for now?

Hello Tom Manning

Thank you for patience,

The sql of the freehand sql report can only be modified from the yellowfin UI, it is not recommended to make changes to the report from database. The graph/charts are dependent of the the data fetched from sql query. Thus, any changes to the sql shall have impact to the chart/graphs created from freehand sql report.

Hope it helps!
Thank you,

Hi Ankit,

What about reports that were NOT created from FreeHand? Will changing the SQL on those impact graphs/charts?

Just thinking as a way forward,

Please advise.

Thank you,

Tom

Hello Tom Manning

Thank you for your patience,

If the report is not created from FreeHand sql, it will not allow you to modify the sql for the report as it is yellowfin generated. The modification to the report sql query from backend i.e. database is not recommended as it could have multiple dependencies and implications.

Hi Ankit,

Did you actually send me a solution? I only see that you recommended changing it on the UI.

Of course we can do that but, again, it will reset graph/chart and report design.

Is there a newer version of Yellowfin where the graphs/charts DO NOT get reset upon editing of the SQL?

Please advise.

Hello Tom Manning

Thank you for your cooperation so far.

Actually, if there are any changes to data when you make change to the sql, it will have impact on the charts which based on the data generated as the result of the sql query. Still we would like to have a meeting with you in order to further investigate on the issue, to see what impact it have on the chart, as you mentioned it gets reset completely. Please share you availability, I am available Monday to Friday from 06:00 am to 12:00 pm IST.

Thank you,

Hello Tom Manning,

Thank you for your cooperation so far,

We wanted to see what would happen to the chart or graph when the freehand SQL query was altered in order to better comprehend this issue. The chart shouldn't reset, but it will modify according to the data. I would appreciate it if you could send a short screen capture video of the issue replication. We also see whether we can reassign the case to help in your time zone in the interim.

Thank you,

That would be 4:30 p.m. for me

Thanks,

Tom
