Is it possible to create multiple Top ranks?

Daniel Marrujo shared this question 16 days ago
In Progress

We have a use case where we want to get the top 5 for each month, however the TOP N advanced function will do it for all the dataset and will not divide it by months (to 5 for each month).

We get close using sections however when doing a chart it gets divided by each month.

Attached example to make it clearer.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for reaching out with this.

We in support are currently unaware of a method to achieve this use case within Yellowfin. Allow me to reach out to our greater global team to see if we know of a way to accomplish this or if we may need to approach this use case with an enhancement request.

I will be sure to update you promptly with any information I uncover.

Best,

Jared

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the patience on this while I researched this further.

Our team noted that this may be achievable by 'Putting the Moth field in as a Section' with report sections: https://wiki.yellowfinbi.com/display/yfcurrent/Sections

The team also mentioned "this may need to be done with freehand SQL and union all the different months as queries using TOP or LIMIT SQL Functions". This method was however described as being more high maintenance than the latter.

Let me know if you could test this with using report sections or if you end up looking into freehand SQL.

Best Regards,

Jared

Hi Jared,

Thank you for your assistance on this. Daniel submitted this on my behalf, and you answers are what I had also come up with. Freehand SQL works ok, but since we can't use the parameters in the SQL statements, its not flexible enough. The Sections idea works for showing the data in a table format, but not in a chart. Perhaps this capability could be added in future releases.

Thanks,

Christine

Hi Christine and Daniel,

I feel this is a decent candidate for an Idea. These are created as candidates for Enhancement Requests. Before becoming a request, ideas will be reviewed by our Product Team and chosen for Enhancements based on feasibility, level of positive impact to the user experience, and votes from the community.

I would be happy to raise this as an Idea, I would just need a written Use Case to provide our dev team. Are you or your team able to provide this?

Thanks,

Jared

Hi Jared,

Thanks for submitting it on our behalf. Our Use Case is this:

Customer would like to see the top 5 Services for Incident tickets per month, for the past 3 months. The report needs to work with filters, so we can narrow the results based on which groups worked the tickets. We can get the information in table format using Sections for each month. But we want to visualize the data in a chart, and cannot. Attached is a picture of the report in table format.
