Google Maps API Switched to Pay-As-You-Go Model

As of July 16, 2018 Google has implemented a pay-as-you-go model for its Google Maps API where you get $200 free usage every month for Maps, Routes, or Places. You have to associate a credit card so that you can get billed if your site has requests that exceed the $200 credit they give you monthly for free.

If you exceed the $200, you will see a "For development purposes only" watermark:

It should also be noted users will be required to obtain new API keys, and use them to replace existing keys.
