Width change on bar chart when color is added

David Rue shared this question 14 days ago
Completed

I can create a standard horizontal bar chart that looks fine, but all the bars are the same color. If I drag a field into the Color option for a chart, the bars changes to very skinny lines and I don't understand why or how to fix it. See attached.

I'm not sure what part of this article is supposed to tell me why the column width is impacted when I add a field to the color option. The fact that width gets very skinning and the placement of the line is different for each option makes me think the report is actually plotting every job type for each value, but hiding all but the one that actually applies. You can clearly see this in the attachment because the horizontal line for each value isn't in the same spot in relation to the labels.

The Job Type field I added to the Color section is a dimension. In your example, it appears to be a summed metric. Would that have anything to do with it?

Hello David Rue,

I hope you are doing well.

Regarding your inquiry, could you please try changing the chart type from a horizontal bar chart to an auto chart? Please let us know the outcome.

That worked. Why does the auto-chart handle this correctly but the horizontal bar chart does not?

I don't get the label option to show data labels with the auto-chart? Is that right? Is there a way to show the data labels in this case?

Also, is there no way to see the name of the report while editing it?

Hello David Rue

In Auto Chart, the label option is available under the Axis settings, as shown in the snippet below.

I suggest checking the chart settings options to see what features are available and can be added. I’ve shared an article for more details.

Additionally, regarding your question, “Why does the auto chart handle this correctly while the horizontal bar chart does not?” — different chart types are designed for different use cases. You may need to choose the chart type that best aligns with your specific requirements.

Happy to assist further if you have any additional questions.

I'm referring to the data labels. So in this case, I have a auto-chart that is actually a horizontal bar chart. I want to show the values of each bar in the chart (ie. the data labels). The label option you're referring to in the axis settings does not appear to be what I'm talking about.

Hello David Rue,

Regarding your inquiry, I would like to inform you that the auto chart does not support displaying data labels. Could you please try using the stacked horizontal chart and let me know if it meets your requirement?

Note- It is recommended to compare different charts to determine which one best meets your requirements.

The Stacked bar is closer. Is there a reason this chart doesn't give me the option to display the values at the end of the bar? Also, is there anything that can be done to better handle dark text against dark colors so the values can be read easily?

Hello David Rue,

Yes, as shown in your snippet, the ‘Style’ option is available. Currently, the style is set to ‘Default.’ If you switch it to ‘Custom,’ you will be able to select the desired font color, size, and other formatting options. Please try enabling the ‘Style’ option and check the results.

I set the label font to white so that should be fine.
