Excel export feature for optimal column width does not work

Hi Support-Team,

I found at least three places where your optimization function for column width does not work correctly and the text is broken in the middle of a word or, in the case of a date, not displayed at all. This is somewhat annoying for users. I think I remember an enhancement in one of the latest versions, or even in 9.16, which we are currently using.

I have outlined the affected areas in red in the screenshot. Incidentally, increasing the width of the date column from 129px to 131px is sufficient to display the date correctly.

Hello Stefan,

My name is Deepak Chaganti from the Yellowfin Technical Support Team. We have received your support request, and I will be your primary contact on the following ticket:

Ticket Number: #32885
Case Title: Excel export feature for optimal column width does not work

Thanks for sharing the details. Could you please help me with following details so that I can replicate the behaviour in my local YF9.16.

1. Could you please confirm if we are referring to the export option: "Format Column and Row Size" and do we see this issue with wrap text disabled like below:

ad336e085e8f1174b362473aa68fa2aa

It looks like the width is adjusted according to the row data/content, but not the column header. In other words, the column width is determined by the data present in the rows rather than the header.

Sincerely,

Deepak Chaganti

Hi Stefan,

I have created a table with long field contents to test the behavior. Using the settings below, I performed an XLSX export:

Settings:

bfd2b4d90785a662904afa6714f5829f

Export:

f789acbb22900f1c038e86b989c67e60

The option to format column and row size considers the length of the content. It would be great if you could let us know the settings that cause the column header to be truncated.

I will also test with different data lengths or use a field name longer than the content.

Thanks,

Deepak

Hi Deepak,

in my test, I had “Format Column and Row Size” and ‘Wrap text’ enabled. My new test has the “Wrap text” option disabled, and the result is different, but not really usable either. I have circled the problematic areas in red again.

The report description is now somewhat better (green frame). However, there is no reasonable explanation as to why the last two cells (red frame) were not included. This would be the case if I also deactivated the “ROW” option.

The truncated column headers are not an optimized output, and it looks fine on the screen. The date has not improved at all, the 2px in the column width is still missing.

To me, it looks as if your column width calculation is a little too tight for Excel.
